Julia’s Life Journey

This is the post excerpt.

I hope my website will show where I came from, who I am now and where I hope I’m going. You’ll find some Family History, Travel and nature pictures, political meanderings and whatever else strikes me at the moment. Enjoy!

I made this picture in October, 2017, in Monopoli, Puglia, Italy. I think it’s one of the most romantic pictures I’ve ever made.

Edmund Callaway, 1764 Bedford Co., VA-1823 Christian Co., KY

Edmund is my 3rd Great-Grandfather. He was the son of James Callaway and his wife, Sarah Bramblett. James died young and Sarah had a hard time supporting the family after his death. Gradually all of her sons became involved in the Revolutionary War in Virginia or Virginia Co., KY.

Edmund went to Ft. Boonesborough between 1778 and 1783. I am looking for the exact date. His brother, Micajah, had been captured by the Shawanese Indians. When he was released in 1783, Edmund was at Ft. Boonesborough to greet him. Micajah’s story has been recorded by his direct descendant, Rex Callaway, in his book Tomahawks and Treaties. I highly recommend this book! Edmund was a chain carrier for Daniel Boone in 1784.

I thought our line was spelled “Calloway”, although documents others have written spell it many different ways. However, Edmund’s marriage bond to Athaliah contains his signature and it’s clearly “Callaway”.

The Fayette Co. tax lists start in 1787, but the list is in terrible shape. I didn’t find any Callaway in that list. Edmund is probably one of the tithables in Flanders’ or his brother William’s household in 1788, since each of them had 2 white males over 21 in the household. I found him in Fayette in 1789 but not 1790 or 1791. He joined the 8th Regiment of the Kentucky Militia under Col. Levi Todd on 8/9/1792. He is in 1792 -1795 the Fayette tax lists. He is in the 1796 Bourbon Co., KY tax list just one name from my ancestor, Henry Clay. Edmund had no land, 1 slave, 5 horses and 1 cow. I didn’t find him in any other Bourbon Co. tax list. He married Athaliah Wright on March 29, 1796, in Bourbon Co., KY. They were married by Ambrose Dudley, founder of David’s Fork Baptist and part of the “Travelling Church”. James Wright was Bond on the marriage, and he was most likely Athaliah’s brother. Edmund and Athaliah had 10 children. I can’t find them in 1797 or 1798 Fayette Co., Ky tax list, but both of those list appear to be very incomplete – not nearly as long as the previous years.

They moved to Clark Co., KY and are found in the Clark Co. tax lists from 1799 through 1814.  In the 1802 tax list and several later ones, he had 1 or more tavern licenses. He is in the 1810 census there. He was in Johnson’s Regiment of Mounted Kentucky Volunteers and Donaldson’s Second Regiment during the War of 1812. He fought in the Battle of Thames, Ontario, near Detroit on 10/5/1813. There are many deeds for him in Clark Co. His 25 acres purchased in 1812 was on Hood’s Creek at the Mt. Sterling Rd. This is just to the NE of Winchester and very close now to I-64. He seemed to live in that NE section around Strode’s Creek and in the town of Winchester. The “town lots” were 5 acres. They sold some of their property in Winchester for $10,000 on 3/28/1817. I believe this must have been the Winchester Hotel. This sale and mortgage eventually reached the KY Court of Appeals (now the Supreme Court) in 1827.

He moved to Christian Co., KY during 1814 and 1815. He bought 770 acres on Sinking Fork of Little River from Presley Slaughter on 2/17/1817 for $2800. In 1818, he sold half of it to Edward Bradshaw, the original patentee. Edmund was a founding member of the Unitarian Church at Means Schoolhouse in 1817. He is in the Christian Co., KY tax list from 1815 through 1823. He is in the 1820 Christian Co., KY census. He died 4/29/1823. In his Will he directed that each of his “infant” children have a “liberal education”.
